The best feel-good series for vintage fans

Everyday life is often hectic and exhausting. You need something in the evening to lift your mood and wind down. For a while I spent hours scrolling on Instagram, but I have to admit that it didn’t really help me relax. Rather the opposite. So another mood enhancer is needed! It’s a good thing that streaming services exist. After a strenuous and long day, I like light-hearted series best, a real feel-good series that exudes a lot of nostalgia.

What are feel-good series?

There are series that somehow feel like coming home. As soon as the intro starts, you get a good feeling. Relaxation sets in and you can wind down even after the most strenuous day. That’s exactly what a feel-good series has to do for me. In this article I’ll tell you my favorite vintage series that exude exactly that.

All Creatures Great and Small

The new edition of the classic British series from 1987 exudes lots of feel-good vibes. In the 1930s, the young veterinarian James Herriot takes his first job in the practice of the eccentric Dr. Siegfried Farnon in the Yorkshire Dales (Scotland). As a “new guy” he not only has to prove to the local farmers that he can also handle large livestock, he also has to prove to Dr. Farnon that he definitely has what it takes to be a veterinarian. During his visits, the rather shy James meets the attractive Helen Alderson…

Call the Midwife

My favorite feel-good series ever is Call the Midwife. The series takes place in the post-war period in the impoverished district of Poplar, in London’s East End. In the main role: the midwives of the Nonnatus House, a monastery that, among other things, provides obstetric care. The midwives are employed by the church and live and work together with the religious sisters. Professional and private challenges await the hard-working midwives.

By the way, the picture above is obviously not one of the series, but rather my attempt to recreate the midwives’ work outfits. By the way, you can do that too with the clothes linked below. 😉

The curious Creations of Christine McConnell (Netflix Original)

The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell is not a series in the classic sense. There is an action in the background, but it tends to fade into the background. As the title suggests, the focus is on the truly incredible creations of Christine McConnell. In each episode, she bakes, sculpts and sews delicious cakes and stunning dresses with the help of her dazzling creatures who have found a home with her. Even Dita von Teese makes one or two guest appearances here.

By the way: Christine McConnell also has a YouTube account with great DIY videos and is also active on Patreon. If you like spooky creations with a lot of vintage flair, be sure to stop by and thank me later for the tip. 😉

Downton Abbey

Feel-good series tips from RetroCat: Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey is a wonderfully romantic series that begins in the period before the First World War and shows how the lives of the nobility and servants change fundamentally over the war years and into the 1920s. The fictional characters develop further, have to overcome new challenges and some of them die tragically over the course of the series. Despite all the difficulties, Downton Abbey certainly shows a somewhat glorified and romanticized picture of British society around the 1920s. But sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

By the way, there are now also two Downton Abbey films, great cookbooks about the series and a book with cocktail recipes.
