What to wear in the South of France
The vacation season has begun and I’m already dreaming of the sound of the sea, a cool drink on the beach and pure sunshine. A destination of longing is certainly the Côte d’Azur with its wonderful coastal towns. Monaco, Nice, Cannes and Saint Tropez are calling for elegant yet relaxed fashion. Comfortable looks with a maritime flair are perfect. Items of clothing that can be easily combined with each other are particularly useful. This saves you luggage and costs (if you fly). I’ll give you a few ideas for your vacation in the south of France (or somewhere else ;-)) in this blog post.
What to wear in the south of France
The warm climate in the south of France calls for light fabrics, airy cuts and sun protection in the form of straw hats and sunglasses. We prefer to leave tight leggings, long jeans and bulky Crocs at home.
My personal essentials:
- Straw hat
- Basket bag á la Jane Birkin
- Sunglasses
- Stylish swimwear
- Wide-legged trousers
- Blouse and top
- Gingham

A stylish swimsuit for a day of swimming in the Côte d’Azur
Outfit details: Swimsuit: via Amazon* (available in black), hat: Jacquemus, similar via Etsy*
“To Catch a Thief” with Grace Kelly and Cary Grant offers great inspiration for a summer vacation on the Côte d’Azur. For the perfect beach look, I recommend an elegant swimsuit in black or white (or both ;-)), a large straw hat (e.g. via Etsy*) and a matching skirt. So you are simply perfectly dressed on the way to the beach, on the beach and in the beach bar.

What to wear in the south of France: Gingham for a day in St. Tropez

Brigitte Bardot certainly helped make the Vichy pattern famous and popular in the 1950s. Whether as a dress or a combination of skirt and black top – the classic pattern fits perfectly on the Côte d’Azur and is of course particularly perfect for St. Tropez. A very beautiful dress in the style of Brigitte Bardot is available at TopVintage*, for example. Add a straw hat, large sunglasses and a classic basket bag and the outfit is perfect.

In the streets of Nice in a maritime retro outfit
Outfit details: top: old, similar via TopVintage*, skirt: old, similar via TopVintage*, wedges: old, similar via TopVintage*
The classic Breton stripes are part of the French style like the dirndl is part of Bavaria. If you want to spend a day in the magical southern French city of Nice, you will be absolutely perfectly dressed. I like to combine a maritime skirt with the classic striped shirt, which exudes a pure holiday feeling. A great look for strolling through the famous flower market or simply enjoying the atmosphere of the old town.

An elegant look for Cap Ferrat on the Côte d’Azur
Outfit details: dress: old, similar via Etsy*, basket bag: Vintage, similar via Etsy*, wedges: old, similar via TopVintage*
Cap Ferrat is a peninsula on the Côte d’Azur, located between Nice and Monaco. Here one expensive luxury villa is lined up next to the other and Hollywood stars give each other a hand. A place made for enjoying a cold champagne and people watching. In my opinion, the perfect outfit for this is classic and elegant, but not over the top. Unusual stripes, emphatically simple cuts and unusual patterns provide that certain something.

Monaco: A glamorous retro outfit for the luxurious city on the Côte d’Azur
Outfit details: dress: old, similar via Amazon*, basket bag: Vintage, similar via Etsy*, wedges: old, similar via TopVintage*, hat: Vintage, similar via Etsy*, Earrings: Glitter Paradise via Etsy*
Glamorous, expensive and simply breathtaking – Monaco is definitely worth a visit and of course calls for a luxurious outfit. I think you can’t go wrong with a great lemon pattern. It just looks very elegant and summery. I like to wear a hat as sun protection and my beloved basket bag.

A trip to the southern French hinterland in a relaxed outfit
Outfit details: Top: via TopVintage*, trousers: King Louie, similar via mytheresa*, basket bag: Vintage, ähnliche via Etsy*, sandals: Vintage, similar via TopVintage*, hairpiece: via Amazon*
Villages that lie like eagle’s nests in the hills, ancient houses and picturesque alleys – southern France’s hinterland also has a lot to offer. Things are usually a little less glamorous here than directly on the coast. Accordingly, I recommend a timeless, relaxed outfit. A simple top (e.g. via TopVintage*) with colorful capri pants is perfect for this destination.
