Easy hairstyle: An elegant, large bun

A big, elegant bun is one of my absolute favorite hairstyles and quickly became my signature look. No wonder, it’s super easy to make and always looks great. It also goes just as well with everyday looks as it does with glamorous evening gowns. In fact, I’m regularly asked how long I had to stand in front of the mirror to get this great hairstyle. My answer: Less than five minutes, to be honest. How it works? I’ll tell you in this blog post!

The Conditions

Hairstyle tip: RetroCat with a large, elegant bun

The prerequisite for a large bun is hair that is at least slightly longer than shoulder length. If you have a bob and can at least get your hair together in a ponytail, you can cheat with a bun hairpiece (e.g. via Amazon*).

What you need to create an elegant bun

  • A hair tie
  • A hair donut in your haircolour (e.g. via Amazon*)
  • Bobby pins (e.g. via Amazon*)
  • A thin snood (e.g. via Amazon*)
  • Hairspray

By the way: hair donuts are available in all imaginable sizes and for different hair colors. The following applies: the bigger the donut, the more exciting the hairstyle. It also makes sense to buy a hair donut that matches your own hair color, if possible. This way it won’t be noticeable if some of it shows through slightly under the hair.

Simple hairstyle for long and medium-length hair: How to make the Bun

Simple hairstyle for medium-length and long hair: RetroCat with an elegant bun

To start, simply tie your hair into a ponytail. Depending on your mood, you can place it higher up on the head or relatively close to the neck. Personally, I usually place it in the middle of the back of my head. However, if I wear a hat, I put the ponytail relatively low.

Then place the hair around the so-called donut or a bun pillow and secure everything securely with hairpins. Make sure that the hair completely covers the bun cushion at the end. Finally, I use a thin hair net (snood) so that everything stays securely in place. A little hairspray provides an extra dose of hold and keeps the little baby hairs around the face in place.

How to make your bun look even more elegant

A long hair band or pretty hair flowers (e.g. via TopVintage*) spice up the bun even further and ensure a real wow look. The two accessories are a particularly perfect choice for spring and summer.

A fascinator or hat  look particularly great at elegant events and go super well with a bun. It will also be super glamorous if you wear a hairnet decorated with pearls (e.g. via Amazon*) with your bun.

How to team the elegant Bun

By the way, a bun goes wonderfully with deep back necklines, but also makes casual looks immediately more elegant. As already mentioned, hats and buns can also be combined wonderfully.

Large earrings look great with a bun and draw the attention to the face.

A bun is a great choice, especially on hot summer days. This way the neck gets some air and the hair is out of the face.
