How to style modern knitted dresses in an elegant retro look

The first leaves are falling from the trees, the days are becoming noticeably shorter and colder and the sun is appearing less and less – autumn is here! As soon as summer is over, knitwear finally returns. Cardigans and knitted dresses are some of my personal must-haves. They look great, are super comfortable, keep you warm and are perfect for everyday wear, but can also be combined elegantly. In this article I’ll tell you how you can combine knitted dresses from modern shops in a retro look.

Classic knitted dresses for autumn and winter

Knitted dresses are one of my absolute favorite pieces of clothing in fall and winter. If you want to be comfortable but still stylish in everyday life, they are the best choice. At home I like to combine cozy knitted dresses with warm tights. But they can also be styled beautifully and excitingly in no time. For a stylish retro look, I recommend a model with a classic cut.

A fitted top with a flared skirt, for example, can be easily combined in a 50s look. Pencil-look models are also perfect for classic styles. At Bonprix you will find numerous pretty knitted dresses. I chose a black dress with a houndstooth skirt (via Bonprix*).

It doesn’t take much to give a modern knitted dress a retro look. A few accessories really make a big difference here!

  • A petticoat gives flared knitted dresses an authentic 1950s silhouette and ensures that the skirt part swings beautifully when you walk.
  • Waist belts are one of my absolute must-haves. They create a great hourglass silhouette and make dresses and skirts immediately look more retro.
  • In our climate, you simply can’t wear dresses without stockings and tights during the cold season anyway, so why not go for classic seamed stockings? These make the retro look even more authentic. Alternatively, I recommend black, sheer stockings or tights.
  • When it comes to shoes, I also like to go for classic models with heels that are not too high.
  • Personally, I love vintage handbags. They usually have really good quality and are unique. Alternatively, slightly smaller, modern handle bags are also suitable.
  • Brooches also make outfits look more classic and vintage in no time.
