The first guest rooms and restaurants followed – marking the beginning of tourism, the most important economic sector in this area. Since then, numerous vacationers have flocked to the climatic health resort, enjoying the pleasant climate. Large pictures on the beach promenade still bear witness to the stylish bathers of the past. 😉

The Hotel Kvarner Palace offers a stylish stay with sea views and top-notch service. You can book it via Booking*.

Sukošan is a small, quiet harbor town, probably especially popular with boat owners. It’s home to Croatia’s largest marina and is also the starting point for numerous sailing trips. Otherwise, the town is tranquil and offers a relaxed atmosphere—perfect for a few days of vacation to unwind. A stop here is certainly not a must, but we had an apartment here, from where we set off on various day trips and occasionally enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach.

Hotel Lero is a great choice, located a 20-minute coastal walk from the car-free old town. It also offers a small outdoor pool and parking (a crucial feature, as parking in Dubrovnik is scarce and expensive). Book via Booking.com*.
6. Road trip detour to Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina): A touch of the Orient in the heart of Europe
Recommended Time: 1 – 2 Days
A short detour to Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina (warning: border controls as it’s no longer part of the EU!) takes us to one of the most fascinating destinations on this road trip. The Old Bridge, Stari Most, is the city’s most famous landmark and attracts many visitors every year. Mostar combines Ottoman architecture with a unique, oriental flair in the heart of Europe. This is where the Orient meets the Occident.

Tip: Even though the picturesque old town is quite small, I recommend spending the night in Mostar, as the atmosphere is completely different in the evening, when the large crowds of tourists have left. Combine Mostar with a detour to the spectacular Blagaj Rock Monastery; the trip will be doubly worthwhile. The Blagaj Dervish Monastery, picturesquely situated at the headwaters of the Buna River, impresses with its Ottoman architecture and the spiritual atmosphere that surrounds this historic site.

- Exploring the UNESCO-listed old town with its charming narrow streets
- Visiting the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture
- Climbing the Kamerlengo Fortress for panoramic sea views
9. Primošten: The charming coastal village

Primošten is located on a peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is another highlight on our route. Highlights in Vodice:
- Lovely beaches with clear water.
- Bars and clubs for a lively evening.
13. Biograd na Moru: Coastal town with maritime flair
Recommended Time: ½ Day
Biograd na Moru is a charming town with a rich maritime history and a lively promenade. The town offers a wonderful mix of culture, relaxation, and excursions. This stop is definitely not a must, but it’s still a good recommendation for anyone looking for a bit of nightlife during their road trip. Various boat trips also depart from here, for example, to Kornati National Park (also worth a visit, but we didn’t have time for it this time).

15. Opatija: Elegance and Belle Époque flair

Recommended Time: ½ – 1 Day
Opatija, the “Grande Dame” of the Adriatic, exudes the charm of bygone eras with its magnificent Habsburg-era villas, nostalgic grand hotels, and palm-lined promenade. Once a sophisticated seaside resort of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy, it still retains its unique vintage flair, inviting you to stroll and reminisce.
Admittedly, we didn’t actually make this stop on this road trip, but were there once over New Year’s Eve. If you’re new to the city, it’s definitely worth a quick stop. The promenade is particularly impressive, so half a day is perfectly adequate. If you’re looking for a swim, stay a little longer.
Highlights in Opatija:
- Walk along the famous Lungomare promenade
- Gardens of Villa Angiolina
- Nostalgic cafés
16. Motovun: A medieval jewel in Istria
Recommended Time: 1 – 2 Day
Motovun is a charming medieval town in Istria, perched on a hill. It offers fantastic views of the surrounding area and is known for its picturesque streets and the Motovun Film Festival.
Tip: Motovun may be small and easily explored in a day or even half a day. However, the town exudes a very special charm, especially in the early morning and evening, when the crowds have left. That’s why I recommend spending the night here.
Highlights in Motovun:
- Old Town: Cobbled streets and historic buildings.
- Truffles: Be sure to try the truffle specialties in the local restaurants.
- Istria wine region: Try the local wines and specialties.
Hotel recommendation for Motovun:
The family-run Hotel Kaštel is located right in the heart of Motovun and also features a small but fine wellness area with a sauna, a tranquil garden, and an indoor pool. Our Croatia Road Trip Route:
Frequently asked questions about a road trip through Croatia
Where is the most beautiful place in Croatia?
This question isn’t easy to answer, and it’s obviously a matter of taste. But my personal highlights are:
- Dubrovnik
- Trogir
- Šibenik
- Primošten
- Plitvice Lakes
When is the best time to travel to Croatia?
The best time to travel for a road trip is from May to October. However, in midsummer (July/August), many places are very crowded and it’s usually incredibly hot, so May/early June or September are ideal.
How long does a road trip through Croatia take?
A Croatia road trip can be planned flexibly. For the route suggested here, we recommend at least 10–14 days to enjoy the most important highlights and sights in peace.
Do I need a car for the route?
Yes, a private car or rental car is essential for this road trip, as many of the most beautiful places are difficult to reach by public transport.
What are the road conditions in Croatia?
The roads in Croatia are well-developed. The highways, in particular, are modern, but there are some toll roads. Coastal roads offer stunning views but are often very winding—so drive carefully!
Are there tolls in Croatia?
Yes, Croatian highways are subject to tolls. The toll depends on the distance traveled and can be paid in cash or by card at toll stations.
Is wild camping allowed in Croatia?
No, wild camping is officially prohibited in Croatia and can result in heavy fines. However, there are many beautiful campsites along the route.
How much money do you need for a two-week Croatia road trip?
Costs depend on the time of travel and accommodation. On average, you should expect to spend €60–100 per day for accommodation, food, and fuel. Dubrovnik is particularly expensive, but you can often save money in smaller towns.
Can I also drive the route with a motorhome?
Yes, most routes are campervan-friendly, and cars are usually not allowed in the narrow old towns anyway. Many campsites offer parking for campervans. However, campervans are not permitted in some parking lots outside the old towns, so you may have to walk further to reach the sights.
How do I find the best accommodation for a holiday/road trip in Croatia?
Hotels with parking are recommended, as parking is scarce in tourist cities. You can easily find centrally located accommodations with good reviews through platforms like Booking* or AirBnB. Incidentally, small apartments are generally cheaper than hotels, but meals are usually not included. Furthermore, apartments can often only be booked for a certain minimum number of nights, so you don’t have as much flexibility. With careful planning, however, you can make various day trips from an apartment.
Is a road trip through Croatia with children recommended?
Yes, with a customized itinerary, you can definitely venture out on a road trip with children! Croatia offers many family-friendly beaches, national parks, and places for relaxed travel. Especially recommended are the Plitvice Lakes, the Krka Waterfalls, the Dar Mar donkey farm for small children, and the beaches of Primošten.
