How to do it right: Wearing nylons, stockings and tights in peeptoes and sandals
Who doesn’t know this: It’s finally getting warmer, we want to wear your pretty sandals and peeptoes again, but there is one problem: It is still a bit too chilly for bare legs. Furthermore, stockings and tights are such an essential part of my outfits, and not wearing sandals or peeptoes just because I like hosiery? No way! I believe that one definitely can wear nylons, stockings, and tights in open shoes like sandals or peeptoes. We just have to keep a few things in mind when doing so. 😉

How to wear Nylons, Stockings & Tights in Sandals or Peeptoes
Wearing stockings or tights in shoes like sandals or peeptoes was called a fashion no go for quite a long time. Lately, though, you can spot some fashionistas wearing tights in open shoes. However, modern fashion magazines still claim sheer tights are not fashionable at all and should be avoided – especially in shoes like sandals or peeptoes. I don’t think so. So in this blogpost, I’m going to show you how I team my beloved tights and nylons with shoes like sandals or peeptoes. Don’t expect some modern fashion recommendations, but rather som tips from a real hosiery-lover. 😉
What to keep in Mind when wearing Hosiery in open Shoes like Peeptoes and Sandals
When it comes to stockings and tights that look good in shoes like sandals or peeptoes, I recommend to keep the following things in mind:
- When wearing tights in shoes like sandals or peeptoes, I always recommend to choose tights that have some details like patterns, back seams, or similar things, or are colourful. No matter what, for me, it is important that my hosiery is an essential part of my outfit. So I always rather choose something striking instead of simple sheer tights.
- The more graceful the shoes, the more delicate the tights should be.
- Reinforced toes are great, but usually don’t look good in shoes with open toes. There are only a few exceptions:
- The reinforced part is still delicate and neutral, and therefore can’t be seen in open shoes.
- The stockings are colourful and the reinvorced part adds some stylish accents to the look (this style, though, requires some fashionable daring)
- When teaming stockings/tights with sandals, make sure the shoes have a heel – everything else looks like a small girl.
- Last but not least: Experiment! Try on different kinds of shoes and hosiery to find out what you like most. In the following, you will find some inspiration.
How to team Nylons, Stockings & Tights with Peeptoes
I usually teem my peeptoes with colourful, opaque tights, or tights with patterns. Whenever I choose sheer tights, I make sure they have some pretty details like seams or words on it. I also make sure they do not have reinforced, dark toes.

How to team Tights with Peeptoes: Does & Don’ts
- Peeptoes in classy colours like black are easy to team with different kinds of tights.
- Silver or golden peeptoes are real eye-catcher and look great in combination with tights in radiant colours.
- I recommend to not wear tights/stockings with reinforced toes in peeptoes – especially if the reinforced part is dark.
How to team Nylons, Stockings & Tights with Platform Heels
To be honest, platform shoes are a matter of taste, but can definitely look super cool and stylish. If you want to team them with tights, I recommend to choose colourful opaque tights, dark semi-transparent hosiery, or fishnet tights.

How to team Tights with Platform Heels: Does & Don’ts
- In my opinion, platform shoes look even better with tights than without them – so no fear of wearing them!
- Colourful opaque tights, dark semi-transparent hosiery, or fishnet tights look best in platform shoes. If you are brave, you can also wear them with white tights.
- Here too, the golden rule is: Choose tights/stockings without reinforced, dark toes.
How to wear Nylons, Stockings & Tights in Sandals
Sandals look best when wearing them with delicate stockings or tights. I always follow the rule: The more delicate the sandals, the thinner the tights/stockings. I personally also always choose nylons/tights with lovely details (what about colourful seams or pretty polka-dots?) to make them an essential part of my outfit. When wearing seamed nylons, make sure to avoid reinvorced toes, expect they have some pretty (pastel) colours and can be part of the look. A good alternative for everyone who doesn’t like colourful nylons but still likes seams: The Elegance French Heel Stockings by Secrets in Lace in beige. Although they have a black seam, heel and toes are still beige.

How to team Sandals with Tights: Does & Don’ts
- Delicate sandals look best with delicate nylons/stockings.
- Pastel-colours look summery and light and therefore go very well with lovely sandals and pretty summer dresses. Depending on your mood, you can either choose colour-matching tights/nylons or contrast-colours, which looks quite cool as well.
- Again: Avoid reinforced, dark toes, expect they are colourful and therefore part of the look.
- It is best to choose tights/nylons with lovely details, or in gorgeous colours – make your hosiery an essential part of your outfit!
- Patterned tights can be worn in delicate sandals, but make sure the pattern is delicate as well.
How to team Nylons, Stockings & Tights with Strap Sandals
When it comes to strap sandals, just keep the same things in mind as with other sandals. However, as strap sandals usually are quite delicate and elegant, choose delicate, thin nylons/tights. Pastel-colours are a great choice, hosiery with back seams in your skin colour works as well. If you like, you can do colour-blocking by choosing hosiery in a contrast colour to your sandals, colour-matching hosiery looks great as well, of course. I personally wouldn’t choose patterned hosiery for strap sandals, as this might look a bit overloaded.
PS: Modern fashion magazines recommend to wear dark opaque tights in delicate strap sandals. Of course you can do this as well, but this isn’t something I personally would wear. I either wear opaque tights with warm winter dresses where strap sandals definitely don’t make sense, or I wear light summer dresses with delicate nylons and sandals.

How to wear Strap Sandals with Hosiery: Does & Don’ts
- Choose delicate tights/stockings that have some wonderful details or pretty colours.
- Pastel-colours go very well with delicate shoes and light summer dresses.
- Dark fishnet tights or fancy patterns are in general not the best choice for strap sandals, rather choose delicate hosiery.
